In 1937 she did get the praise that she deserved when she acted in Maid of Salem. Later on she acted as Dorthy Dandridge's grandmother In Carmen Jones. She played the part so well rumors sparked that Dandridge might have been her real granddaughter.
In 1983, Madame Sul-Te-Wan was introduced into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame. Without Brave Women like her, we wouldn't be able to have actresses such as Halle Berry or Kerry Washington. Nellie Conley paved the way for many black actors and actresses. She is noted as Hollywood's first African American actress. |
