Madame Sul-Te-Wan is the very first African American Actor to sign a performance contract and become a featured performer. Although keeping that contract wasn't easy. At the end of filming A Birth of a Nation she was fired because of the accusation of her stealing a book from a white actress. She then successfully sued and continued to work with United Artist until her death in 1959.
